This Week's Golf Tip
Improving Your Game
Finding the right swing plane for you
Finding the right swing plane or path is one of the keys to improving your game. While there is a general swing plane that is right for most golfers, the plane is generally flatter for woods and long irons and steeper for mid and short irons. How far you stand from the ball also determines the swing plane. The farther you stand from it, the flatter the plane will be.
Address
To swing on plane, the basic fundamentals of a sound address apply. You want to stand tall with your back straight; bend slightly at the waist and knees; your rear end sticks out and your feet are angled slightly to the right and left.
Your spine angle should be tilted slightly to the right of the ball. This makes it easier for the left shoulder to turn to the right and avoids the feeling that you need to lift the club on the back swing.
Swing Around the Body
The basic swing plane for all players is best achieved by swinging the club more around the body than above it. You should feel as though the rotation of your trunk and shoulders, rather than your arms, elevate the club on the back swing. Any effort to lift the club will disconnect the arms from the body. Maintain your spine angle and the distance between your elbows and you will swing on-plane.
