1.Know the route you are about to embark on. Before you leave the rental counter, ask for specific directions to your destination, including applicable motorway entrances and exit numbers. Your rental agent should be happy to provide you with a local road map to help you find your way.
2.Keep your car doors locked and the windows up when driving or when parked.
3.Avoid hitchhikers, no matter how innocent or needy they driving may seem, hitchhikers can mean bad news.
4.Familiarise yourself with your car’s safety equipment, such as headlights and hazard lights, door locks, and spare tyre, before leaving the rental premises, and of course always fasten your seat belts.
5.Lock purses, wallets, luggage, and valuables in the boot or glove compartment, never leave valuables on display.
6.If you get lost, do not pull over on the side the road to study your map or directions. Instead, drive to the nearest well it populated, public place such as a service station or restaurant. If you leave the vehicle be sure to lock it and take the keys with you.
7.Always park in well lit areas and make sure you have the car keys in your hand when approaching your vehicle. Before entering, be sure to check inside and underneath your car. Lock your doors immediately upon entering.
8.In the rare event you feel that are being followed, immediately proceed to a well lit populated area and call the local police.
9.Use automated teller machines only in busy, unobstructed areas, count your money inside the car with the doors locked.
10.Don’t take shortcuts to save time or exit motorways prematurely to save tolls. Tolls are a nominal charge, change is available at many booths, and your safety is more important.
11.If your car breaks down on a major thoroughfare, lock the doors, turn on the hazard lights and wait for the police to arrive. If someone offers help, have them call the police.
12.Most car companies offer child safety, toddler and infant seats. Since there may be limited availability or these well in advance. Be aware that at some locations, the rental car company may not guarantee cap the charge at a maximum per rental.
